New Haven

Welcome to your campaign!
A blog for your campaign

Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Invite them with either their email address or their Obsidian Portal username.

2. Edit your home page

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.

That’s it! The rest is up to your and your players.

Character Creation and really tall plants

Last time on Demon The Descent…

Character creation! We didn’t have the full party but had time to put together three characters

1. Izzy the Succubus. A former destroyer, truly enjoying the human life
2. Pea the Innocent. She’s not sure how she got here, or but she wants to go back home.
3. Mr. Stephir, the attorney at law. God damn it Sean I hate you so goddamn much.

Summery: The ring runs into each other aboard a ferry even though none of them individually planned it. There was something afoot. Pea and Izzy tried to enjoy the ferry ride over, while Mr. Sephir decided it was best to hide below deck using his high tech cardboard box to conceal himself.

Izzy met a man in a black longcoat, with black hair, sharp face, who couldn’t stop playing with his phone. They took a selfie together and the camera gave off the slightest bit of aether, hinting at their an angelic or demonic origin.

Pea ran into a man in a black longcoat, with brown hair, sharp face, who couldn’t stop playing with his phone. He was taking selfies on the deck, posing like a teenager, and snapping photos with her in frame. She too felt the hint of aether. Later, from his hiding spot, Mr Sephir spotted the man searching below deck for something… or someone.

While trying to figure out who the man was, Pea asked around and the only information she found was that when a passenger went to the bathroom, he ran into the man in black coat. When he got out of the stall, there was the very similar man in the grey coat standing there as well, both typing away on their phones.

Mr. Sephir used the top deck of the ship as a lookout point, and saw both men on the opposite sides of the ferry, looking like they were texting each other.

Izzy confronting the man in the grey longcoat about the other’s flirting with him. He claimed that the other was his brother, and gave Izzy his brother’s phone number as well as tickets to the sunflower tour. When she pressed him for more information, “attempting to utilize her assets”, the man took a picture stealthily. Since Izzy could sense the device still being used, she realized he was taking a picture and took the phone from him. The man vanished instantly, and the phone received a command to delete itself. Thinking fast, Izzy drained the battery so the phone couldn’t operate anymore.

They disembarked, and since the sunflower field seemed to be an object of interest, the group decided to investigate from afar. The field had an usual clover pattern, and at the exact center had one of the world’s tallest sunflowers sitting without any form of support.

There was one person mowing the grass nearby and Izzy talked to him to try to find out more. He had a triangle tattoo on the back of his neck, and when pressed for information he memory was severely lacking. The only things he remembers about his latest job was digging oddly deep holes and using batteries to charge the sunflowers. Izzy asked him to show her the batteries they started walking around the field to go to the back shed.

The man’s tattoo started glowing as they got close, and his demeanor changed. He started insisting they go toward the center of the sunflower field. From his vantage point, Sephir could see two other workers heading Izzy’s way, with one of them grabbing something out from the sunflower patches. He also was then able to spot a man in a white coat, with blonde hair and a sharp face.

Burning Sunflowers and Mysterious Plots

As we left off, Izzy was going to be lead to the center of the Sunflowers by a cultist, where the holes were dug. She decided to fight back, and after an awkward struggle of neither party actually doing anything, she punched the cultist in the balls and ran for it. She was chased by the man in the white coat, who had blonde hair and a sharp face.

Mr. Sephir and Pea ran to another side of the sunflower field in an attempt to cause a distraction. Pea used the binoculars to focus the sun’s rays to try to set the field on fire. By bending the laws of physics, Pea set the field ablaze. This distracted the other two cultists, who went to work on trying to fight the blaze.

A mysterious demon, who’s been following the ring comes up from a distance, seeing the chaos. He spots not only the running man playing on his cellphone, but another duplicate riding a vespa toward the fields from the distance. He reached into his pocket and stole the cellphone from the Vespa riding copy, making him dissipate.

The final cellphone wielding angel has a taser ready to attack the ring, but Mr. Sephir uses one of his tricks to deescalate the situation. The angel puts the taser away and gives the group a chance to surrender. Then the mystery demon defies reality again by pulling out the final cellphone and making the angel dissipate yet again.

The mystery demon, who is just known as the street kid, introduces himself to the rest of the ring. They team up to investigate the shed where the cultist said the batteries were storied, and they found exactly what the cultist said. At this time, the fire spread to the middle of the sunflower field, burning the tallest sunflower and destroying the project. This caused the angel the ring has been facing with to appear out of thin air, and immediately pass out from the shock of his connection with the God Machine being severed. The ring bring his body back to the Institute so the professionals can handle him.

Two days later, the ring (Now including the street kid) meet with Christopher Stabler, a demonic handler, to be set up with operations inside the city. The first operation is Operation Dark Skies which is a plot to turn off all the lights in the city to have a clear view of the night sky. The plan to turn off the nights seem to have originated from the Celestial Observatory, a combination observatory/planetarium in Neo-Bejing. They investigated the location and found that it’s being run by a suspected Angel Yuri Gao. In the basement, the demons found an aether waste bin.

Izzy and Mr. Sephir investigate the laser light show, with Mr. Sephir in the crowd and Izzy trying to sneak into the control room. While the humans were entranced by the show, Mr. Sephir was bored out of his mind at a very boring display, but it did consist of a pattern of mysterious runes light up on the ceiling. Izzy opened the control room door and barged in. In response, Yuri attempted to drain the air from her lungs. Mr. Sephir used his abilities to urge Yuri to cool it, and Izzy used that attempt to run.

Reviewing the runes, Pea came to the conclusion that the runes were mean to implant two suggestions into humans. Turn off the lights on Valentine’s Night, and to convince their friends to go to the show.

The ring then investigated the other lead they had on Operation Dark Skies. There’s reason to believe the death of an inmate at the New Haven Multi-Security Penitentiary on Friday, the 12th plays some role in the lights out night. The prisoner, Nazir Boer, appears to be an innocent man. To investigate further, Izzy slept with the ring’s handler to get a meetup with Warden, the exile that runs the prison. It gave the party insight onto Nazir’s innocence, and a lead on who the possible assassin could be, but to get more information they’d have to infiltrate the prison.

Izzy and Pea followed some prison staff after the evening shift to a bar. Pea used an embed to figure out who would be willing to give up information. With exceptional luck, she found someone who worked with the security systems who absolutely hated their job. The duo cornered the man into a bathroom and awkwarded him into signing a simple pact on a paper towel showing that they could free him of both the job and financial worry.

This went swimmingly, and the man came back for more. Using a contract Mr. Sephir wrote up, they bought the man’s position at the jail in exchange for a pension loophole that let him retire early at his current pay. Demonic pacts are weird.

The street kid took on this identity to get access to the system. They found out that the suspected angel Alex Black gave very specific instructions to a trustee prisoner to kill Nazir after dinner on Friday the 12th.

Let's Go to Prison

The session started with Mr. Sephir meeting with his new client, the framed Nazir Boer. Sephir’s plan was to cause Mr. Boer to have a mental breakdown and be transferred to a psych unit, which didn’t go down as planned. After accidentally getting Nazir’s hopes up, Sephir put his plan into action. Nazir lost his ability to understand meaning at a conceptual level and went into a dissociative state. Mr. Sephir alerted the guards and they came rushing in. They were worried that Nazir was going to lash out, and prepared and took an aggressive stance. Sephir tried to cause everyone to calm down, but his embed malfunctioned and escalated the situation. The guards beat the daylights out of Nazir until Sephir intervened by throwing himself in the way of the attackers.
That following night, the ring met again at the Celestial Observatory to confront Yuri Gao’s mass hypnosis. When they arrived, they found out that that Mr. Gao now had a bodyguard because of the incident of the previous week where Izzy interrupted Gao overseeing the laser light show. When the mortals were pacified by arcane runes, the group confronted the bodyguard and Gao in the control room. As Mr. Sephir fought the bodyguard who turned out to be a lesser angel, Izzy rushed Mr. Gao and used an improvised flamethrower on him. The control chamber was full of pure oxygen, which ignited and sent out a blast of fire.
The lesser angel teleported around the room, delivering a variety of blows to Sephir and Izzy. Mr. Sephir used his embed to force the angel to speak and admit, “Working for Mr. Gao is the worst job I’ve ever worked but it’s my calling.” Mr. Sephir then broke reality and changed the meaning to the lesser angel, making his job to cry out in a loud voice. The angel then started hooting and hollering as much as possible.
Mr. Sephir and Pea join Izzy in the control room who’s standing over a burnt lump. They notice a door in the control room that leads to an upper level that was previously concealed by Mr. Gao’s concealment powers. The second floor of the Celestial Observatory is the actual Observatory, including a giant telescope. Examining the telescope revealed a series of three lenses with arcane runes on them. Izzy manifested her demonic strength and broke the lenses, releasing aether into the air. The ring heard sirens in the distance and decided to book it. On the way out, they remember about the crystal embedded in the laser light show control panel. Izzy breaks the protective layer over the crystals, and Sephir uses his taser to shock the system. It corrupts the occult matrix and the laser light show transforms from embedding commands to embedding nonsense that the human brain cannot process. It leads to multiple viewers having seziures. They flee the scene before a paramilitary looking transport pulls up to the Observatory. Reading the paper larter, Sephir finds out that the responders were part of the Contagion Annihilation Research Laboratories (CARL) response teams. When returning to the location the next day, Sephir finds the Celestial Observatory boarded up like it’s been out of business for years.
The next night the ring infiltrates the shipyards to find out what the God Machine is having shipped to New Haven before getting transported south. They find a series of solar panels designed to go outside of a space shuttle in a shipping container, they all seem to be attached to gravestones. Sephir’s ability to pick up on any sounds can hear bleedover from the twilight, hearing the cry of imprisoned souls. The panels were meant to look fine to anyone viewing them on the side of a shuttle, but instead used souls to help power the shuttles. Izzy decides the best way to get rid of the gravestones binding the souls is to eat the components until the souls are free. She frees 119 of the souls, but traps one in her cellphone. The soul’s name in life was Jeremy Shultz, a young model with a strapping voice but awful attitude.
Finally the ring receives information that Alex Black, the androgynous angel, will be proposing the Lights Out night to the city council at the monthly public session. The ring shuts it down before it can even begin by sabotaging the catering to the event. Izzy infiltrates the YumCorp catering company by blowing the kid who runs the cash register and takes orders for events to incapacity them, and then releases mustard gas in the kitchen to force the staff to evacuate the building.
Without food to provide to the public, the government had to postpone the public session until the next week. Alex Black, defeated, goes back to her apartment. Sephir and Izzy tail her to Silver Towers, an apartment complex that’s only for 55 and older. Sephir and Izzy would stand out among the elderly there, so they’re forced to abandon the chase.
Finally, that Friday, Mr. Sephir visits Nazir in the prison infirmary. Nazir has been beaten even more severely on his way to the infirmary back when Mr. Sephir first visited. He’s barely able to respond yes and no to questions. Realizing he’s still a target, Mr. Sephir goes to Warden for help. Warden makes Mr. Sephir a temporary cover as a medical intern to guard Nazir during the time window where Nazir was meant to die. The first attempt on his life comes from the bag of saline Nazir was almost administered. Mr. Sephir noticed something wiggling inside of the bag from the corner of his eye, but couldn’t see anything directly. Mr. Sephir convinced the overworked nurse to let him put the saline bag up because another doctor needed to see her, and she complied. Mr. Sephir then disposed of the possibly tainted bag, and got a new bag out for Nazir. As he was trying to administer the bag, another nurse noticed that Mr. Sephir was doing a terrible job. The intern cover almost fizzled out, but Mr. Sephir forced reality to hold but then lost the ability to pronounce latin terms in any intelligent fashion. E.G. Deus Ex Machine would become Days axe Macaroni.
Mr. Sephir did his best to not exist in the background, but then noticed a doctor with a weird looking spine talking to Nazir. The doctor asked if Nazir was still in great pain, and Nazir moved his head yes. The doctor was about to adjust Nazir’s morphine drip to a dangerous level, but then Mr. Sephir used his abilities to force the doctor to be unable to understand the meaning of words. The dials on the machine became unreadable. Undaunted by this bizarre incident, the doctor starts petting the dispenser and tries to tell the machine to adjust it’s own levels. However, it comes out as nonsense about dragons and dreams. The doctor gets frustrated, and when the nurse comes the doctor just lets out a word salad instead of swearing. He gets lead to the on-call room to rest. 7’O Clock strikes. Nazir is safe.
When Mr. Sephir leaves, he notices some stars are brighter than others. Pea’s looking at the stars too. She puts together the God Machine’s plan. It was going to use Nazir’s death to affect the stars. Since he didn’t die, the stars didn’t align in the way it needed.
